JOMTIEN has long been Pattaya's smaller sister, and it probably likes it that way.

The place has a much quieter feel, with fewer restaurants and bars, but with its own audience who knows what it wants.

The Surf Kitchen is one of the bigger restaurants in Jomtien, and offers a wide range of food.

Although it specialises in European cuisine, the tempting display of seafood laying on ice as you walk in is hard to turn down. We sat outside and waited a while until a waitress was free. She was worth the wait as not only did she look good, she knew her stuff.

My friend was in two minds over which dish to choose, but the waitress seemed to know which was best, and so she ordered the Hungarian-style beef goulash with butter noodles (199 Baht). It's easy to be in several minds when checking out the menu, as the restaurant offers an enormous array of Italian, German, French, and some unusual Thai dishes.

I went for the veal escalope with vegetable and fries (180 Baht).

The veal was reasonable, and was given a boost by the blue cheese sauce which came with it. As you'd expect, the waitress was spot on as the goulash was a hit, although the beef was slightly stringy.

Surf Kitchen offers a fantastic choice of food in lively surroundings, and provides decent food that's value for money.
