SCOOBY Doo had the right idea.

When it came to solving crime, the hapless hound may have been found wanting, but when it came to sandwiches he knew what he was doing.

Scooby would regularly pile endless fillings between slices of bread, so the resulting meal threatened to dwarf him, before devouring them in one gigantic bite.

The people at Subway follow a similar pattern. They may not quite make the mountainous meals that Scooby used to, but they come close.

Subway is an ideal stop-off for breakfast or lunch, and offers healthy, filling combinations.

The options for your bread roll are varied, with pork, chicken, beef and fish available.

I went for the 6 in ham, chicken and roast beef variety (109 baht) while my friend went for the meatball sandwich (129 baht). Nothing is left to chance here, and the waitresses ensure you get exactly what you want.

There’s a choice of roll: Italian herb, parmesan and oregano, or garlic. There’s a dozen or so salad dishes to pick from, and finally there’s the dilemma over whether to have the honey, mustard or mayo dressing.

The result is a mix of crisp salad and fresh meat. The bread is light and not at all stodgy, while the roast beef was excellent.

The interior is bright, with plenty of natural light shining through, and copies of the days English-language papers are scattered around.

A friend of mine reckons it’s one of the healthiest meals you can get here and, while it may not compare too well with a bowl of fruit and some muesli, it does taste infinitely better.
