AMONG the larger frontages on Walking Street is P72, a bar and restaurant rolled into one.

On one side you have the bar, a deep, well-designed place with wooden fittings.

A selection of girls in black dresses are there to serve and are a lively bunch, while there’s a big screen TV if you’re into sport.

For the most part of the evening it’s fairly quiet and is about the only place that doesn’t dispense Euro-dance music and high-tempo tracks.

Later in the night two guys do turn up, plug in their i-Pod and strum along to older songs from REM and Oasis.

There’s a wide selection of drinks on offer, thanks largely to the adjoining restaurant. Food there is varied and ranges from cheeseburgers to salad to Thai.

We went for a cheeseburger (60 baht) and fries (30 baht) and a tuna salad (60 baht), which we ate by the bar.

Service was fast and friendly, and we were soon tucking into a tasty burger, complete with relish, and a salad, complete with heaps of dressing.

If you want to sit in the restaurant things are a little more up-market, with a formal table lay-out, red table cloths, and waiter service. Compared with other venues on Walking Street, P72 is a simple but large place, and obviously being hotel much of its clientele is a captive audience.

It’s also smack in the middle of Walking Street and so is a popular venue, and if you are overcome by the night’s activities, rooms go from 550 baht a night.
